POSITIONING ONESELF FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER PATH

Career is a life-long process and building a successful one requires deliberate effort. The truth is that numerous opportunities abound but will only be accessed by individuals who rightly position themselves.  Generally, the process begins with a thorough self-assessment.  A discerning youth must not only be aware of his interests, but also the skills he has or need to develop. Many resources are available online to help individuals get a sense of their interest and skills, as well as gain employment experience and learn about employment opportunities. The following are also very useful:

Mentorship

Mentoring—matching youth or “mentees” with responsible, caring “mentors,” is a very important support for youth as they transition to the employment workforce. Mentoring provides opportunities for youth to develop emotional bonds with mentors who have more life and work experience and can also provide guidance, and referrals for job opportunities to help them succeed in life and meet their goals. Mentoring relationships essentially includes caring, empathy, consistent, and long-lasting relationships, often with some combination of role modeling, teaching, and advising.

A topic-focused mentoring, involves a particular problem and aims at helping mentees reach specific goals, such as improving academic performance or preparing for employment opportunities.

A Career-focused mentoring, can take a variety of forms and may focus on different pieces of career development and employment. Some examples include assisting with the following;

  • Writing resumes and cover letters.
  • Conducting mock interviews and providing support for answering interview questions.
  • Exploring possible careers and assisting with job, internship or program search.
  • Developing on-the-job skills (soft skills or technical skills).
  • Modeling behavior, attitudes, or skills in the workplace (job-shadowing).
  • Career planning and goal setting.

Soft Skills development and training

Soft skills are generally defined as personal qualities, not technical, that translate to good job performance. Soft skills can be learned through a variety of means, including youth programs, volunteering, and service-learning.

Apprenticeship

As it is common with people from the Eastern part of Nigeria, apprenticeship is a valuable work-based learning opportunity that can provide youth with workplace skills that lead to business opportunities and career exposures. Apprentices receive hands-on learning and related instruction to supplement their education and have the potential to earn income.

Paid or Unpaid Internships

Internships, both paid and unpaid, provide youth with short-term, practical experiences to learn about careers, develop networks, and experience the workplace. Internships give youth the opportunity to explore what they like and do not like about certain careers. They allow individuals who might not know what career they want to pursue, a chance to see whether a certain environment, job, or management style fits their needs. Both on-the-job experience and the application process allow youth to develop skills so that they are able to enter the job market with relevant career experience.

Job Search strategies

In the 21st century, jobs can be found at the push of a button on the internet. How are you able to search for opportunities that are currently available? Are you still reliant on the old methods of searching through newspapers and submitting hardcopy CVs to the office through the gateman? Or are you now employing the usage of online platforms and social media sites to search for jobs? The later is certainly the best option available. Platforms such as LinkedIn, sesewa.com, jobberman.com, jobgurus.com.ng, jobzilla.ng, myjobmag.com, ngcareers.com and hotnigerianjobs.com are some of the most visited sites in Nigeria. Another very good strategy to find a suitable job opening easily and quickly is by using https://www.google.com.ng/alerts to set up your personalized job alert. Notifications here are sent directly to your email on a REGULAR and CONSISTENT basis.
