Thus far, a lot has been said about passion but there is still a lot more to be said. This is because the importance of passion cannot be overemphasized, especially in a world where great things do not come so easily. Yes! Do not be deceived, great success comes with a lot of hard work and perseverance and one must have the right attitude to definitely carry on. So today, it will be great to learn about ‘GRIT’.
Over the years, it has been suggested that the way a person acts is a function of nature and nurture. The beautiful thing is that while certain things are inborn, several other things can be learnt, and ‘Grit’ happens to be one of those. In simple terms, Grit is a combination of passion and perseverance. It has to do with the ability of an individual to believe so much in something and be willing to work towards it no matter the challenges, and no matter how long it takes to materialize. Look at it this way: on one hand, passion gets you started and on the other, perseverance keeps you from stopping.
In the real world, there is rarely a smooth journey and there is always a tendency to fail over and over again, especially when aiming at something really high. Grit means having stamina in spite of the many failures and not quitting during life’s marathon. In her in-depth researches, Angela Duckworth posited that as much as talent, I.Q and skills are important, one may not attain great heights if there is no motivation for the long run. Oh yes! It is not the smartest kids that succeed all the time, but the once with the strongest will to attain greater height.
So maybe you are a change maker struggling to make a difference in your little community. Or you probably started a business and experienced some hitches along the way. Well, it is a good time to test how gritty you are. Try a few questions: Is your passion in check? What is your level of perseverance? How gritty are you? The good news is that failure is not a permanent condition. In fact, the brain grows in response to challenges. Do you even know that Neuroscientists claim that our brains are like muscles that stretch whenever we make mistakes?
This is probably the best time to grow your brains. Now is the time to stir your passion and develop grit. It all starts by having a growth mindset and realizing that the ability to learn is not fixed, but grows with one’s effort. Hence, one can develop grit if one puts in enough effort. In turn, great success can be achieved so long as a person is passionate enough to persevere no matter the challenges.
Again, note that even after generating tremendous energy, there is need to sustain it. This is why it is important to associate with people of like passion. Surround yourself with people who believe in your dreams. Remember that your community matters a lot, your network of friends is just as valuable.
