Experience AI Comes to Classrooms in Nigeria: Building the Future Through AI Literacy
Artificial Intelligence is no longer a distant concept reserved for tech experts and global corporations. It is becoming part of everyday life — influencing how we learn, work, communicate, and solve problems. Across the world, countries are investing heavily in AI education to prepare young people for the future economy, and Nigeria cannot afford to be left behind.
At MindtheGap Foundation, we believe every young Nigerian deserves the opportunity to understand, explore, and shape the technologies transforming the world. That belief is why we are proud to partner with the Raspberry Pi Foundation to bring the Experience AI programme into Nigerian classrooms.
Why AI Education Matters Now
Nigeria is home to one of the youngest populations in the world. While this presents enormous potential, it also creates an urgent responsibility to equip young people with future-ready skills.
AI literacy is quickly becoming as important as digital literacy. Beyond coding and technology, AI education helps students develop:
- Critical thinking
- Problem-solving skills
- Creativity and innovation
- Ethical reasoning
- Digital confidence
- Career awareness for emerging industries
Research and educational experts continue to emphasize that AI can improve learning experiences, increase access to quality education, and help young people solve real-world challenges. (Businessday NG)
What is Experience AI?
Experience AI is a global educational programme developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Google DeepMind, funded by Google.org. The programme introduces young learners and educators to the foundations of artificial intelligence through practical, engaging, and accessible learning resources. (Businessday NG)
The programme includes:
- Teacher training
- Classroom lesson plans
- Interactive activities
- Videos and slide decks
- AI safety and ethics education
- Student-centered learning experiences
The goal is simple: empower educators to confidently teach AI concepts while helping students become creators and innovators — not just consumers of technology.
The Official Launch in Nigeria
The Experience AI programme was officially launched in Nigeria at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja, alongside representatives from the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and other education stakeholders. (Businessday NG)
The launch marked an important step toward expanding AI literacy across Nigerian schools and communities.
Pilot states for the programme include:
- Lagos
- Ogun
- Oyo
- Osun
- Ondo
- Kwara
- Anambra
- Rivers
- Kaduna
- Kano
- Taraba
- Gombe
- Jigawa
- Nasarawa
Through this initiative, educators across these states will gain access to tools, training, and support needed to bring AI learning directly into classrooms.
Empowering Educators First
Teachers remain at the heart of educational transformation.
One of the strongest aspects of the Experience AI programme is its train-the-trainer model. Educators receive practical AI training and then transfer that knowledge to students within their schools and communities.
This creates a multiplier effect capable of reaching hundreds of thousands of learners nationwide.
According to the programme launch announcement, MindtheGap Foundation has already trained over 10,000 educators who have collectively reached more than one million young people through technology and digital literacy initiatives. (Businessday NG)
AI Literacy Beyond Urban Centers
One major challenge facing technology education in Nigeria is unequal access. Many underserved communities still lack exposure to emerging digital tools and opportunities.
By working with educators, NYSC members, and government stakeholders, the programme aims to ensure AI literacy reaches communities beyond major urban centers.
This nationwide approach matters because the future of innovation in Nigeria should not be limited by geography.
What Nigerian Students Stand to Gain
Students participating in Experience AI will learn more than just technical concepts.
They will gain the confidence to:
- Understand how AI systems work
- Think critically about technology
- Identify bias and misinformation
- Build solutions to local challenges
- Explore careers in technology and innovation
- Use AI responsibly and ethically
As AI continues reshaping industries globally, young Nigerians must be prepared not only to participate in the future economy but also to lead it.
The Bigger Vision
The future of Nigeria’s digital economy depends heavily on human capacity development.
Across conversations about education and technology in Nigeria, there is growing agreement that AI education must move from discussion to implementation. (Businessday NG)
MindtheGap Foundation sees Experience AI as more than a programme. It is part of a broader movement to bridge the digital divide and create opportunities for young Nigerians to thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
We envision a future where:
- Teachers confidently teach emerging technologies
- Students innovate solutions for local problems
- Communities embrace responsible technology use
- Nigerian youth compete globally in AI and digital innovation
Building Nigeria’s AI-Ready Generation
Artificial intelligence will shape the future of education, business, healthcare, agriculture, and governance. Preparing young people for that future starts with access, awareness, and opportunity.
Through partnerships, educator empowerment, and community-driven learning, Experience AI is helping to build an AI-ready generation in Nigeria.
The future belongs to those prepared to create it — and Nigerian youth deserve every opportunity to lead that future.
